Euchre Club of Chicago Vol 5.06
Newsletter
August 5, 2008

Welcome to the Euchre Club of Chicago weekly newsletter -- a collection of event information, club news, gossip, advice, and things that amuse us from the Internets. And there's no truth to the rumor that we were thrown out of the mosh pit at Lollapalooza.

If you have ideas, gossip to divulge, humorous thoughts, abject praise, rampant criticism, ideas to improve the club, or you're just kinda lonely and want to talk, send a note to euchrechicago@yahoo.com.

  • Every Picture Tells A Story ...

... and now the story of the ECC Anniversary Tournament at Sea is even better. Thanks to our shutter-happy members, we now have even more pictures of last month's cruise for your viewing pleasure.

Relive the excitement by going to our website, and clicking on "photos" to see the link to the Anniversary Party pics.

Of course, you also can use the website to check your average, look ahead at special events in the club, and read previous editions of this newsletter.

And if you took pictures on the cruise, we'd love to see them, and share them with everyone. Send them to us in an email at euchrechicago@yahoo.com or bring them on a CD Rom to any play venue. We promise not to upload the ones that make your butt look big.

    BREAKING NEWS: Market Days

The last thing the ECC wants to do is make you choose between playing euchre and watching Jennifer Holliday on stage at Northalsted Market Days.

As a result, there will be NO PLAY at Charlie's this coming Sunday, August 10th.

Play will occur as scheduled at Big Chicks on Saturday the 9th, however.

    This Week's Weather: Lucent

This week's weather provided by the meteorologists at WFLD-TV Fox Chicago.

    TUESDAY 86 / 69 Partly Cloudy
    WEDNESDAY 84 / 65 Partly Cloudy
    THURSDAY 82 / 65 Cloudy
    FRIDAY 82 / 63 Sunny
    SATURDAY 80 / 61 Sunny

    Variation Night: I Got Six

In our ongoing attempt to keep making game play interesting for ECC members, our next Variation Night is Sunday, August 17th at Charlie's.

It'll be an encore of a favorite from last year, the Six- Game Variation. Players will play six games of euchre (instead of the usual five), and drop their lowest score. That's right, no need to worry about that Festering you got in game 4!

And as a reminder: No, your scores from variation night do not count in your overall average. There's been some flip- flopping on this for the past few years, but we've put our foot (feet?) down.

If you have any other questions, please ask Sunday director Geoff Dankert.

    Dates to Remember

Sunday, August 10: NO PLAY at Charlie's
Friday, August 15: Beginning of Bicycle Grand Prix Of Euchre, Doubletree Hotel Oak Brook (details below)
Sunday, August 17: Variation night: I Got Six (see above)

    The World Series Of Euchre

Sick of those endless poker shows on TV? Wondering why no one's come up with the "World Series Of Euchre?" Well, guess what? Someone has. And it's coming to Chicago's suburbs!

The Bicycle Grand Prix World Series of Card Games is holding an open tournament at the Doubletree Hotel in Oak Brook on the weekend of August 15th. It's expected to attract players from across the country.

Registration costs $99 per person, and the website promises $10,000 in guaranteed cash prizes. That could buy you a whole bunch of pitchers.

For more information or to register, click here. Let's show 'em how we play!

    Overheard At Euchre

"Would you care to milk me?" - ECC member Andy Ulman. He makes more friends with that line, honestly ...

    Wednesday, July 30th: -- Michael Meadows with a 55!

    Ask Hoyle

    Dear Hoyle --
At a table I was watching recently, one of the players decided to go alone, and while he didn't say "I'm going alone," he started to push the down pile across the table. However, before he could finish the push, the player to his left played his first card. Does the loner play out, or do all four participants play the hand?
    - 4 In The Hand

    Dear Four:
Under the standard rules of card play, the hand commences as soon as the player to dealer's left lays down his/her first card. If a loner has been declared prior to that, then the loner plays. But it's not "legal" to declare a loner AFTER that first card goes down.

That's why it's critical that you announce your loner intentions clearly to the table BEFORE the hand is played, without relying on non-verbal cues such as pushing the down pile. As always, your sexy venue directors are on hand to adjudicate any disputes, but let's remember that what brings us together is a friendly card game, and a little direct communication can help keep it that way.

If you have a question about Euchre strategy, ECC club rules, relationships or just life in general, send an e-mail to resident expert Hoyle at euchrechicago@yahoo.com. We promise all e- mails are anonymous.

PR Recap: Threads And The City

ECC member Geoff Dankert already misses Wesley on Project Runway:

After the model pick, Heidi sends the designers home to wait for Tim Gunn to take them out for a "night on the town." Jerell hopes they're going to a nice restaurant, while Rocker Stella thinks it'll be one of Tim's favorite clubs. Evidently, none of them has seen the show before, so they're all stunned when Tim herds them onto a double-decker sightseeing bus.

They're to snap pictures of New York at night and fashion an evening look inspired by one of the photographs. Back at the workroom, Tim is worried by the can-can-esque ruffles on the front of Emily's dress, but she's not listening. Leathery Blayne tries to teach Tim street "lingo," and hearing Tim say "Holla at yer boy!" makes me die a little inside.

Judgment, and oh my God, the guest judge is Sandra Bernhard! Quick, what do Joe Dennis and I have in common with Sandra Bernhard? (Answer later) Terri Who Looks Like Donna Summer In A Good Way turns out an amazing street look, but Kenley wins with a colorful fitted dress with asymmetrical skirt.

    Jesus, Nina looks fantastic.

When Miss Kors calls Hunky Keith's wet-magazine- inspired frock "toilet paper caught in a windstorm," I worry that another cute gay guy's about to bounce. But no, Emily pays the price for not listening to Tim Gunn. She and her ZZ Top earrings are auf'ed.

Next time: Fabric theft! Gay-bashing! Blayne's never heard of "Sgt. Pepper!"

(Answer: yes, we're all from Flint. Holla!)
