Welcome to the Euchre Club of Chicago weekly newsletter,
a wacky, entertaining collection of things about the club,
upcoming events, and occasional things that amuse us from
the Internets. And there's no truth to the rumor that we've
been caught on camera in an ill-fitting bikini.
If you have ideas, gossip to divulge, humorous thoughts,
abject praise, rampant criticism, or ideas to improve the
club, send a note to
euchrechicago@yahoo.com.

Ask Hoyle |
 |
Dear Hoyle,
I've seen a lot of players playing Bridge lately.
Can playing Bridge make you a better Euchre player?
Bridge to Nowhere
Dear BTN--
As a matter of fact, one element of Bridge play,
"points," can indeed make your Euchre play better -
but I warn you it's going to give you a headache.
Consider yourself warned.
In bridge, the top cards have "points," and if
you have enough "points" in your hand, you can open
the bidding (i.e. decide what suit trump should be).
The same thing is possible in Euchre. Experts agree
on the following: Right bower - 10 points. Left
bower - 7 points. Ace of trump - 6 points. King of
trump - 5 points. All other trump - 4 points each.
But wait, there's more. Ace of an opposite-trump
color - 5 points. King of an opposite-trump color -
1 point. Ace of same trump color - 4 points. King of
same trump color - 1 point. Now with these points in
your head, add up the points in your head. On the
first round, if you have 21 points or more, order up
trump. On the second round, it only take 16 points.
Confused? I thought so.
We'll talk more about this next week.
If you have a question about Euchre strategy,
ECC club rules, relationships or just
life in general, send an e-mail to resident
expert Hoyle at
euchrechicago@yahoo.com. We promise all e- mails
are anonymous, and the answers may just surprise
you.

ECC Hall of Fame
|
|
|
|
There is so much news to report this week, but the
most important of all is the creation of the Euchre
Club of Chicago HALL OF FAME! Each year, the
BOD will ask the members to nominate any member,
current or former, to the hall of fame. The nominee
should exhibit the qualities becoming a place of
honor, including great sportsmanship, positive
attitude, and a desire to make the ECC a better
place. Please join us in welcoming the first three
inductees!
