Welcome to the Euchre Club of Chicago weekly newsletter,
a wacky, entertaining collection of things about the club,
upcoming events, and occasional things that amuse us from
the Internets. And there's no truth to the rumor that we've
our high school nickname was "drama chipmunk."
If you have ideas, gossip to divulge, humorous thoughts,
abject praise, rampant criticism, or ideas to improve the
club, send a note to

Some reminders about the upcoming ECC Anniversary
Party at sea: /p>
1:00pm - Sign up will begin at Navy Pier
at the Shoreline Sightseeing Navy Pier dock (click
here for map.)
2:00pm - We board the ship, lunch is served
3:00pm - Tournament Play begins
5:00pm - Tournament Play ends, prizes awarded
5:30pm - Annual Membership Meeting and a few
other surprises
6:00pm - Boat returns to Navy Pier -- and let
the after party begin!
A few other things you'll need to know:
- You MUST have a partner to play in the tournament,
and both you and your partner MUST sign in at the
same time.
- Because this is tournament play, we must have
complete tables, so if you are the last pair to
check in, you may not be able to play (no two-handed
games on this ship). You can still enjoy the cruise
and the hospitality, however.
- A buffet lunch is provided, and when you sign
in, both you and your partner will receive four
drink tickets, good for a beverage at the beer/wine
bar. Additional drink tickets may be purchased
from any board member.
- Please RSVP either by adding your name and your
partner's name to the RSVP list at Big Chick's or
Charlie's, or send an email to
euchrechicago@yahoo.com.
- ALL RSVP'S MUST BE IN BY SUNDAY, JULY 8.
- If you want to play but don't have a partner,
send an email to the address above and we'll do our
best to match you up with someone.
- Sunday director Geoff Dankert is your
tournament master for the cruise, so if you have any
questions, please seek him out -- or you can also
check in with any board member.

Ask Hoyle |
 |
Dear Hoyle, /p>
A Euchre question for you. It seems like some
people get set two or three times per game, but it
also seems like they get really high scores. Is the
secret to winning a bar tab to get set a lot? -
Hate Giving Up Two Points
Dear Hater:
You're close. The secret to winning the bar tab
is to get the highest score of the night (duh), and
you can't score points if you don't call trump. Yes,
it's very likely that you'll get set on occasion
(and some people seem to have that occasion more
than others), but you have to find the fine line
between being overly aggressive -- simply to stop
the other team from calling something -- and overly
meek -- passing on an iffy hand only to give your
opponents a chance to call (and make) a loner. They
don't call it "Euchre" for nothing, so take solace
in the fact that it's okay to get set. Of course, if
your opponents have eight or nine points and you get
set, you can take that same solace by sitting in the
loser seat.
Next week, your responses to "Hates Seafood."
If you have a question about Euchre strategy,
ECC club rules, relationships or just
life in general, send an e-mail to resident
expert Hoyle at
euchrechicago@yahoo.com. We promise all e- mails
are anonymous, and the answers may just surprise
you.
