Dear Ron,
Welcome to the Euchre Club of Chicago weekly newsletter,
a wacky, entertaining collection of things about the club,
upcoming events, and occasional things that amuse us from
the Internets. And there's no truth to the rumor that we're
the ones who took the topless pictures of Antonella Barba.
If you have ideas, gossip to divulge, humorous thoughts,
abject praise, rampant criticism, or ideas to improve the
club, send a note to
euchrechicago@yahoo.com.

NEW TIME ON SUNDAYS! |
 |
The members have spoken, and in a landslide
decision, Sundays will be moving to 6:00pm at the
start of Daylight Savings Time, which is, uh,
next week (see story below). So beginning March 11,
Sunday play moves to 6:00pm. Spread it around.

Tournament of Champions - The Winners |
 |
A hearty “thank you!” to everyone who took part in
last Thursday’s first-ever ECC Tournament of
Champions. Thirty-eight people played in our double-
elimination “World Series Of Euchre”-style tourney
at Mary’s Attic, upstairs from Hamburger Mary’s.
May we have the envelopes, please?
Fourth Place – Dave Judy -- $50
Third Place – Paul Sullenger -- $75
Second Place – Dave Pimm -- $100
...and your winner...
John Romalis -- $150!
Many thanks to all the players for their patience
and good sportsmanship, and to the friendly (and
hot!) folks at Hamburger Mary’s for their
hospitality. If you have thoughts on how we might
improve a similar tournament in the future, please
let any board member know!

(featuring ECC member Brian Harder), presents
Swingin' Night Music. Join Nocturne on Wednesday
March 14 or Wednesday March 21 for an evening of
swinging songs, harmonious melodies and playful fun.
You'll hear a variety of songs from yesteryear,
including some brand new arrangements with a unique
swing feel. The show will begin at 8:00pm. Seating
is limited for this show which will be held at
Davenport's Piano Bar and Cabaret located at 1383 N.
Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. Tickets are only $10
plus a two drink minimum and reservations can be
made at 773-278-1830.
Formed in 2003, Nocturne is a three-man a
cappella swing trio that specializes in period music
from the 30's and 40's. Clever arrangements and
detailed harmonies give each song a fresh new sound
while still respecting the beautiful melodies that
were originally written. Visit their web site at

This week's Blind Item |
 |
Could it be that a member of the board (who we
hear has an exhibitionist streak) was involved in a
little four- play after the Tournament of Champions
Thursday night? Tongues were wagging, and apparently
that's not all. Seems like it pays to stick around
after these ECC tournaments, from what we hear.

Ask Hoyle |
 |
Dear Hoyle: I had fun at the Tournament of
Champions, but I noticed that some people didn’t
play very many games, and others played a lot. Why? – Brackets Broken?
Dear BB:
Because we had such a big response for the
tournament, several people had to sit out certain
rounds, so that we didn’t have to throw two- or
three- handed games into the tournament. In all
cases, those “byes” were awarded to higher-seeded
players, which is how it’s done in darts, softball
and other “bracket”-style double-elimination
tournaments. Any suggestions you have would be great
... and no, there’s no truth to the rumor that we’re
considering a triple-elimination next time so that
Paul Zehren can stay in for one more game!
If you have a question about b>Euchre strategy,
ECC club rules, relationships or just
life in general, send an e-mail to resident
expert Hoyle at
euchrechicago@yahoo.com. We promise all e- mails
are anonymous, and the answers may just surprise
you.

YoYou told us what you think
|
|
|
|
Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out
the recent membership survey online. We had some
fantastic responses, some a little zzare, and
some, well, not quite fit for print.
Over the next several newsletters we'll be sharing
some of the survey highlights with you, so be sure
to look here next week for the first round of
responses.
And please, if you have an opinion to share, don't
make us beat it out of you. If you have a concern or
suggestion for the club, please share it with any
board member -- or better yet, why not come to a
board meeting? They're tons o' fun! Really. Okay, at
least they're more fun than Legends...
