Welcome to the Euchre Club of Chicago weekly newsletter
-- a collection of event information, club news, gossip,
advice, and things that amuse us from the Internets. And
there's no truth to the rumor that we've ever refused to
leave a Walgreens at 2am..
If you have ideas, gossip to divulge, humorous thoughts,
abject praise, rampant criticism, ideas to improve the club,
or you're just kinda lonely and want to talk, send a note to

Holiday Party - December 2 |
 |
If you notice the snow falling today, then it might
put you in the mood for the holidays. Good thing,
since our annual Holiday Party is only a month away!
The party will be at
Athena Restaurant in Greektown on Sunday,
December 2. Sign-up begins at Noon, lunch at 1pm and
tournament play begins at 2pm. Oh, and did we
mention the open bar?
If you'd like to RSVP, please send an email to
euchrechicago@yahoo.com and include your name
and your partner's name. Don't forget this is a
partner tournament, and you must have a partner to
play. If you need one, let us know via email and
we'll do our best to match you up.
Questions? Talk to Sunday director (and tournament
boss) Geoff Dankert. And oh, Ho Ho Ho.

Our apologies to Randall Ward, as he was that
charming senorita at the recent Halloween party, not
Gregory Ward. Randall's costume was voted co-best in
show, and while Gregory looked good as Black Bart,
he just didn't have Randall's boobs.

Ask Hoyle |
 |
Dear Hoyle,
My partner and I were defending. The player to
my right called trump. I had none in my hand. The
player to my left led the ace of hearts for the
first trick. My partner threw-off. The person to my
right had to follow suit with his heart. I tossed in
my low heart.
They then bled trump and my partner lost his
unprotected left bower to the right bower. They got
2 points for getting all 5 tricks.
Call me dumb, but shouldn't you always use your
unprotected trump at the first opportunity? -

Dear DUMBASS:
Your question boils down to: when defending, should
you always take a trick if you have the chance?
Generally the answer is yes, but there are always
exceptions. If you suspect the right bower is buried
or in your partner's hand, then you might want to
hang on to the left. If you only have one small
trump and suspect the next player will overtrump you
anyway, it might be better to keep your trump and
hope for the best on the next trick. Ultimately your
trump is your own to play -- or misplay.
