If you have ideas, gossip to divulge, humorous thoughts, abject praise, rampant criticism, ideas to improve the club, or you're just kinda lonely and want to talk, send a note to euchrechicago@yahoo.com.

  • Daylight Savings Time -- Coming Soon!

Just a reminder that Daylight Savings Time is only a month away (Sunday, November 4 for those of you keeping track), and remember, once Daylight Savings Time goes into effect, start time at Charlie's on Sundays moves to 5pm! We'll repeat -- on Sunday, November 4, Sundays at Charlie's moves to 5pm, and will stay at 5pm until the spring.

Karaoke, as always, starts right after.

    Spinoff - the BCC

Don't forget -- the Bridge Club of Chicago now meets at Charlie's on Sundays starting at 2pm. Anyone at any skill level is welcome to join -- if you'd like to learn the game, there are a lot of patient folks who will teach you. If you already know the game, those same folks will make you a better player.

There's not even a charge to play! (Of course, there aren't any prizes either, but what can you do.) For more information on the BCC, chat up ECC member John Romalis the next time you see him.

And as an aside, we think John should start wearing more scarves...

What's new with the TOC 2?

So this week, instead of another recap on the upcoming Tournament of Champions II, we're running an interview with TOC2 Co-Director Geoff Dankert, who answers some of your questions (and frankly, criticisms) on how the TOC2 will be even better than the first TOC! Look to the column to the right for our Q&A with Geoff, and if you have your own question for him, send it to euchrechicago@yahoo.com.

A reminder that the tournament will close for registration on Saturday the 13th, so be sure to either send us an email at the address above, or write your name on the sign-up list at any play venue.

Did we mention there'd be food too?

    Countdown to Halloween

In honor of our upcoming Halloween Party (Saturday October 27 @ Big Chicks -- wear a costume, play for free!), we present to you a monthlong look at some of the scariest films of all time . . . re-enacted by animated bunnies. Yes, it's cooler than it sounds.

This week we look at back at the Stephen King thriller, The Shining. Redrum, anyone?

Next week: what has 8 coeds, buckets of blood and a chainsaw?

    Ask Hoyle

    Dear Hoyle,

There's a certain member of the club who absolutely drives me crazy. Either he's in my face trying to put me down, or he's trying to stick his hands down my pants. I've been about one beer away from punching him in the face, and it's making me want to stay away from the club. What can I do?- Fed Up

    Dear F.U.:
Let's face it -- in a club of about 150 people, there are bound to be some people who get your goat. Some people don't realize how annoying they can be, and some people are annoying on purpose because it gives them some sort of thrill (sort of like elementary school bullies). In either case, the best advice I can give is to turn the other cheek (not so it too can be groped), but to ignore the ignoramus. The ones who do it on purpose? They'll soon get bored and move on. The saps who don't know how much they irritate? Well, you only need to play two consecutive games with them and then you're free.

Whatever you do, don't turn to violence. Any violence toward another player is grounds for expulsion from the club. The good news is that this works both ways - - if you find yourself being touched inappropriately or another member physically bothers you, then tell a board member immediately. The club has a three- strikes-you're-out rule, however for serious cases dismissal can be immediate.

So now I just hope you weren't talking about me...

    New & Improved - TOC2!

Q: How is this TOC different from the first TOC?

Our first go at this was a valiant effort. A lot of people had fun, but we knew we had room for improvement, and we've listened to your suggestions about how to make it better.

Q: Explain how the double elimination will work. Will there be as many "byes?"

When players arrive, they'll be split into one of two groups ("north" and "south," if you will). Each side will play through its own bracket structure, and merge later to determine the final winner. We're going to run this tournament without a losers' bracket, so there won't be as many people sitting out. Byes may be unavoidable, given the number of people who will be signed up, but we'll work out a formula to make them more equitable.

Q: I've played 30 times and have a 41.3 average. How will I be seeded against someone who has only played 3 times but has a 48 average?

When seeding people for the tournament, we will take into account number of plays. Using your example, you may still be ranked lower than the hypothetical 3- play person, but you two will be much closer to one another.

Next week, more Q&A with Geoff!
